Behind The Screens: Social Media Age Verification in an Insecure World

5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11 in Whitinger Business 144

This event is presented by Institute for the Study of Political Economy, Miller College of Business.

Governments are pushing new laws to regulate social media through age verification in an effort to safeguard children on the internet. Shoshana Weissmann’s eye-opening talk will break down how these policies may be doing more harm than good. Do these “security” policies put you at risk? From security flaws to identity theft risks, discover what’s really at stake when your digital identity is on the line.

Shoshana Weissmann oversees R Street’s social media, email marketing, website, and other digital assets. She also works on occupational licensing reform, social media regulatory policy, age-verification policy, child identity theft, and other issues. Her work in technology policy sometimes references her own experiences as a child online and how she used social media as a teenager to grow her career and seek out medical treatment. She lives in Washington, DC, and enjoys the Snapchat hot dog.

Presented by the Institute for the Study of Political Economy. The Institute for the Study of Political Economy (ISPE) focuses on the analysis of governance within the study of political economy. Our research examines the characteristics of good public and private governance, identifying the institutions and rules that promote it. Further, we assess the impact of governance—both good and bad—on various outcomes. Our primary interests include wealth and income distribution, economic growth, health, freedom and liberty, and the quality of life in the American Midwest. To positively influence these outcomes, we share our findings from rigorous academic research with students, the general public, leaders of private organizations, and elected and appointed officials.
