The Center for Economic and Civic Learning (CECL) at Ball State continues to advance the launch of a Civic Studies Minor an interdisciplinary program designed to empower students from all majors with the knowledge, skills, and experiences to advance our democracy and live a meaningful life.

Open to undergraduate students across all colleges, this 15-credit minor equips students to engage meaningfully in civic life, connect academic learning to real-world community needs, and prepare for impactful careers in education, law, journalism, nonprofit leadership, public policy, advocacy, and more.

The Civic Studies Minor is flexible and customizable, with options that work alongside any degree. It emphasizes:

  • One Core Course: Choose between HONR 390 (Citizenship, Community, and Leadership) or CVIC 200 (Civic Studies)
  • Interdisciplinary Electives: Select from courses in philosophy, political science, communication, journalism, environmental studies, education, and more
  • Campus & Community Engagement: Participate in civic events and complete five hours of community service or civic project work
  • Capstone Experience: Complete either a faculty-mentored project on a civic issue or a reflective paper that ties learning to civic identity

No prerequisites are required, and students may begin the program at any point in their academic journey.

Visit a new website for the Civic Studies Minor website for details, sample pathways, advising resources, and request more information.

If your courses or programs align with the mission of the Civic Studies Minor, we invite collaboration and cross-listing. Let’s work together to strengthen civic learning opportunities for Ball State students.

This new minor affirms Ball State’s commitment to preparing students for lives of purpose, participation, and public service.
