Ball State University Builds on Collaboration in Sub-Saharan Africa

Ball State proudly announces the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Ngaoundéré, Cameroon, to strengthen and expand ongoing partnerships in Sub-Saharan Africa. This milestone agreement, signed by Ball State President Geoffrey S. Mearns establishes a five-year partnership to enhance academic collaboration and cultural exchange between the two institutions.

The MOU builds on a history of impactful collaboration, led by Dr. Michael Ndemanu, Associate Professor of Multicultural Education at Ball State. Dr. Ndemanu is a distinguished Fulbright Scholar awardee ('21, '22) who has developed several partnerships with universities in Africa. In 2023 and 2024, he spearheaded a U.S. Department of State-funded project in Northern Cameroon, advancing competency-based approaches to university pedagogies and to foster innovation in education in the region.

This partnership exemplifies Ball State University’s commitment to global collaboration and educational excellence,” said Dr. David J. Roof, Associate Professor of Educational Studies at Ball State and a collaborator on the initiative. 

Dr. Ndemanu emphasized the importance of the MOU and this renewed partnership, noting its transformative potential. “This MOU will serve as a catalyst for enhancing learner-centered education and experiential learning in Cameroon. It’s an honor to continue contributing to the professional development of faculty members at the University of Ngaoundéré,” he said.

The MOU lays the groundwork for a range of collaborative activities, including faculty and student exchange, joint research initiatives, and the development of innovative programs. A significant focus of the agreement is the enhancement of modern pedagogical methods, place-based learning, and civic engagement. The partnership is supported by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Cameroon.

The University of Ngaoundéré, highlighted the potential of this partnership to drive social and economic development through higher education. The collaboration will continue support for the Center for Transformative Education at the University of Ngaoundéré, promoting shared research and best practices in teaching and learning.

This agreement underscores Ball State’s dedication to global partnerships and its mission to impact communities through transformative education and cross-cultural understanding.
