Ball State Marks 9/11's 20th Anniversary with a Ceremony on Sept. 10, Plus Other Activities

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11, Ball State University will hold a ceremony at the campus’ Beneficence Statue at 9:11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 10.

Provost Susana Rivera-Mills will lead the ceremony as students, faculty, staff, and the Muncie community gather to remember the lives that were affected and lost on September 11, 2001. Those who cannot attend the ceremony are encouraged to pause for a moment of silence.

Additional commemorative activities will take place during the week, and are open to campus and Muncie communities:

  • Poetry, by creative writing students commemorating 9/11, will be featured on e-boards on the second floor of the Robert Bell Building.
     
  • University Libraries’ online 9/11 LibGuide brings together information, resources, and national/international responses related to the attacks. Additional materials are featured in the Bracken Library lobby. A virtual lobby display can also be accessed here.
     
  • A panel discussion, “Afghanistan: Status and Future” will be hosted by the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9 in AJ 175 or via Zoom. No registration is necessary. Panelists include:

Mayor Dan Ridenour, City of Muncie

Bibi Bahrami, Founder and President of AWAKEN (Afghan Women’s & Kids’ Education & Necessities)

Lt. Colonel James Babbitt, Chair of the Military Science Department

Kenneth Holland, Professor and Dean (Academics, Research and International Affairs), Jindal Global Law School-India.

Moderator: Lawrence H. Gerstein, Director of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies and the George and Frances Ball Distinguished Professor of Psychology-Counseling

 

  • In partnership with the School of Music, the Shafer Tower carillon bells will toll every ten seconds between 9 a.m. and 9:10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11.  
     
  • Student Voluntary Services (SVS) will host their 9/11 Day of Service on Saturday, Sept. 18 as part of Muncie’s annual White River Cleanup event. Students can register through the SVS website. Faculty, staff, and community members can register through Muncie-Delaware Clean & Beautiful.
