Apply for Faculty Learning Community on Integrating Sustainability into your Teaching

January 16, 2026

Would you like to incorporate sustainability concepts (environmental, economic, and/or social) into one of your already existing courses? Or maybe you want to create a new sustainability focused course to be considered for the new core within the Sustainability Beneficence theme?

We invite you to enhance your teaching and engagement with environmental and interconnected economic and people-centric issues by participating in the Integrating Sustainability into your Teaching Faculty Learning Community (FLC), January-April, 2026. This FLC will be an intellectually stimulating and collegial experience for Ball State educators. This FLC is open to anyone who teaches students at Ball State across all colleges, departments, and units.  Please know that we welcome FLC participants who have little to no experience related to sustainability and/or teaching sustainability concepts.

The FLC will explore:

  • Sustainability in all its forms;
  • A wide variety of strategies and assignments to meaningfully integrate sustainability—broadly defined—into courses;
  • Linking sustainability to student learning outcomes;
  • Ways to engage resource people from across campus who can help facilitate and catalyze integrating sustainability into your teaching; and
  • Ways to use the Ball State campus as a canvas for engaging students in learning about sustainability and generating solutions to sustainability issues.

FLC participants will:

  • Investigate sustainability and how it can be incorporated into their course/s;
  • Redesign a course syllabus incorporating sustainability concepts; and
  • Design learning experiences integrating sustainability.

Selected members should plan to meet in-person for 1 ½ -2 hours every three weeks throughout spring 2026. The meeting schedule will be determined based on the availability of the participants during the weeks of February 2, February 23, March 16, April 6, and April 20.

Participants will receive an honorarium of $300 upon completion of a new or revised syllabus and several learning experiences in a Recognized Incentive Activity (RIA) account or as a salary stipend. Funds will be distributed in May 2026. The deadline for applying is at 11:59 pm on FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, 2026. Applicants will be notified regarding acceptance no later than Wednesday, January 28, 2026. The first meeting will occur during the week of February 2. The specific day and time will be determined by participants’ availability.
