Apply for Faculty Learning Community on Disability Accessibility and College to Career Transition

More and more students with disabilities are attending Ball State and disclosing their need for accommodations. Are you experiencing an uptick of accommodations in your classes? Are you mentoring or advising students about life after college and their career aspirations? If any of those things interest you, then we invite you to participate in the Disability Accessibility and College to Career Transition Faculty Learning Community (FLC), September-April 2026.  

This FLC will explore the basics about disability accommodations and making courses inclusive and accessible for everyone with an emphasis on supporting the college to career transition. Participants will gain tips and strategies incorporate into their classes. Faculty can start making courses more accessible from the beginning as they consider how their course supports student growth and competency development to their careers.

Topics to be covered: 

  • The legal & ethical framework about disability accommodations
  • The accommodation process & common accommodations
  • Universal Design for Learning (UDL) & effective communication best practices
  • The role of faculty/staff in career exploration
  • Connecting with campus resources
  • Disclosure & self-advocacy
  • Leveraging disability as a strength

FLC participants will: 

  • Identify key concepts and processes associated with accommodations for students with disabilities
  • Develop best practices for working with students with disabilities on career exploration in your field
  • Create a personalized toolkit of campus resources for collaboration on career and disability issues
  • Design and submit an assignment, activity, syllabus modification, and/or course modification that demonstrates building greater supports, resources, and experiences for a successful college to career transition

This FLC is open to all full- and part-time faculty and staff.  Selected members should plan to meet in-person for approximately 1 ½ hours each month throughout AY2025-26. Meetings during the fall semester will occur Tuesdays from 2-3:15pm on September 23, October 14, November 4, and December 2. Spring dates TBD.

Participants will receive an honorarium of $750 upon completion of the FLC deliverable/s in a Recognized Incentive Activity (RIA) account or as a salary stipend. Funds will be distributed in May 2026. The application deadline is Friday, September 5, 2025. You will be notified regarding your acceptance no later than Wednesday, September 10, 2025. The first meeting for the fall semester will be Tuesday, September 23 2-3:15pm location TBA.
