Provost Anand Marri, the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, and the University Core Curriculum Task Force would like to draw your attention to the advertisement and position description below for the inaugural Director of the University Core Curriculum. This 12-month appointment will be an internal hire of a tenured faculty member, with a 50% administrative buyout, a summer stipend to begin in May of 2024, and will be reviewed every year with an anticipated three-year term. There is the possibility of an additional two-year extension for the inaugural appointee.

  • A brief vita (no more than ten pages) that emphasizes teaching and administrative experience, as well as any publications related to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
  • A cover letter (no more than three pages) that addresses why the applicant is interested in and qualified for the position, a clear vision for the new core implementation, and how the applicant’s teaching philosophy is aligned with the University’s Beneficence values, including Inclusive Excellence.

Minimum Qualifications:

    • Must be a tenured Ball State Faculty member holding the rank of at least Associate Professor.
    • Documented record of excellence in undergraduate teaching.
    • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of inclusive excellence pedagogical practices in higher education.
    • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of assessment in improving curriculum.
    • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
    • Experienced in curriculum development and revision.
    • Ability to foster productive, collaborative relationships across departments and colleges.
    • Ability to make data-informed decisions.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Previous leadership experience at department, college, and/or University level(s).
    • Teaching experience in general education courses.
    • Rank of professor.

Job Description:

The Director of the University Core Curriculum will report to the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, and will assist the Provost and the faculty in all matters concerning the University Core Curriculum. In this inaugural position, the Director will:

  • Lead the Implementation Task Force in the transition from the current core curriculum to the newly revised core, which includes: solidifying the Beneficence clusters, creating a template for submission of core courses, communicating with departments and colleges about deadlines, soliciting input from students, and collaborating with other key stakeholders and units across campus concerning the implementation of the new core.
  • Participate in and provide leadership to the University Core Curriculum Committee, including any revisions to the core curriculum.
  • Monitor course offerings to ensure the quantity and quality of courses and sections are appropriate for student need.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Assessment and IRDS to ensure regular review of all core curriculum courses and to document continuous improvement.
  • Work with the Associate Provost for Faculty Professional Development to execute professional development opportunities and support for faculty teaching core courses.
  • Serve as a core curriculum informational resource for faculty, advisors, and other stakeholders across campus.
  • Collaborate with other campus stakeholders in supporting the Indiana College Core Certificate and in helping dual credit and transfer students transition to Ball State.
  • Support other campus offices in planning and executing a unique and supportive first year experience (including transfer and dual credit students) for BSU students.
  • Champion Ball State’s core curriculum through effective marketing campaigns, outreach, and website development.
