An Opportunity for All: Hear From a Member of the Little Rock Nine

August 19, 2026
As Fall classes get underway, I hope you will consider sharing a special opportunity.

On Tuesday, Sept. 15, Ball State will welcome Minnijean Brown-Trickey, a member of the historic Little Rock Nine, for Education, Courage, and the Work of Democracy as part of Constitution Week.

As a teenager, Brown-Trickey was one of nine African American students who integrated Little Rock Central High School in 1957. She has spent the decades since as an educator, community leader, and advocate for young people, human rights, civic responsibility, and democratic life.

For faculty: As you begin the semester, we hope you'll consider making this event part of your classes and encouraging your students to attend. Please consider offering students credit or extra credit for attending, perhaps paired with a short reflection or class discussion.

For students: Come hear history firsthand. This is a chance to listen to and learn from someone whose experiences are part of the history and to think with her about what courage, citizenship, education, and democracy ask of us today.
